ROBERT SCHUMANN Vol. 3

As keyboards became more powerful during the nineteenth century, so demand for piano duet arrangements increased dramatically. Robert Schumann, already a keen duet player, wrote for the burgeoning market, though largely for the salon and not the concert stage. He almost always supervised the arrangements of his music but the Overture to ‘Hermann and Dorothea’ is rare in that he arranged it himself. Symphony No. 3 ‘Rhenish’ was arranged by his esteemed colleague and disciple Carl Reinecke, while the Overture to ‘Scenes from Goethe’s Faust’ was the work of his brother-in-law Woldemar Bargiel.

ROBERT SCHUMANN Vol. 2

The demand for piano duet arrangements of concert music during Schumann’s lifetime was considerable. An inveterate piano duettist himself, Schumann supervised the String Quartet arrangements made by the talented young composer Otto Dresel, whose brilliant solutions to formal problems produced these acclaimed adaptations, for use in the home or the salon. It was another fine arranger and composer, Theodor Kirchner – admired by Clara Schumann and Brahms – who arranged the Studies for the pedal piano, Op. 56, in 1888. This is the second of seven volumes to include Schumann’s entire orchestral works, and selected chamber work, arranged for piano duet.

ROBERT SCHUMANN Vol. 1

Piano arrangements were the main way for people to become acquainted with concert repertoire in Schumann’s day, and publishers ensured that the huge demand for such versions was met. Otto Dresel’s arrangement of the String Quartet, Op. 41, No. 3 was approved by the composer. Clara Schumann was dedicatee and soloist for the Piano Quintet, Op. 44, and she was able to draw on her intimate knowledge of her husband’s work to make her own highly effective arrangement. This is the first of seven volumes including Schumann’s entire orchestral works arranged for piano duet.

WALZER

It is common knowledge that waltzes for 4 hands were the embodiment of convivial music-making in the early 1800s. Wolfgang Rihm (born in 1952) upholds this tradition in his short waltzes. This CD presents also the World Première Recording of the 8 Waltzes Op. 54 of Antonín Dvořák, the 3 Waltz-Caprices Op. 16 of Sigfrid Karg-Elert and the 6 Waltzes Op. 22 of Max Reger.
